International Women's Day: Empowering Midlife Women to Thrive
Mar 08, 2025Celebrating International Women’s Day!
Today, I am diving into a special topic—International Women’s Day—a day that celebrates the achievements of women while also recognizing the challenges we still face.
This isn’t just about history; it’s about how we, as women in midlife, can redefine what empowerment looks like for us today. Let’s talk about how we can use this day as a catalyst for change, self-care, and community.
International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated every year on March 8th. It began in the early 1900s during a time of great social and political change. The first National Women’s Day was observed in the United States in 1909, inspired by a labor movement advocating for better working conditions for women. A year later, in 1910, the idea for an international celebration was proposed at a women’s conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.
By 1911, International Women’s Day was officially recognized in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, marking the start of a movement that would grow worldwide. Over the decades, it has become a global platform for discussions about gender equality, women’s rights, and workplace policies—including those that impact women’s health and midlife experiences.
The theme for International Women’s Day changes annually, reflecting ongoing issues such as gender equity, inclusion, and empowerment. But at its core, this day reminds us that women’s strength, contributions, and well-being deserve recognition—not just on March 8th, but every single day.
Why Does International Women’s Day Matter for Women in Midlife?
Much of the mainstream conversation around women’s empowerment focuses on young women—career advancement, breaking barriers, and leadership. But what about us? Women who have spent decades caring, building, leading, and overcoming?
For midlife women, empowerment takes on a different meaning. It’s not just about what we can do for others—it’s about reclaiming our health, our voices, and our wellbeing.
Here’s what International Women’s Day can mean for us.
Health Advocacy & Menopause Awareness
- Women’s health—particularly menopause and aging—is still not widely recognized in workplace policies, healthcare, or public discourse.
- Advocating for menopause-friendly workplaces, better healthcare access, and mental health support is part of empowering women at every stage.
- This is one of the reasons why I created Blooming Together, to help women navigate menopause, nutrition, fitness, and emotional well-being with confidence.
Redefining Midlife as a Time of Growth, Not Decline
- Society often paints a picture of midlife as a time of slowing down. But IWD is a reminder that we are not invisible—we are just getting started.
- Whether it’s starting a new wellness journey, launching a business, or focusing on mental and emotional renewal, this is a time of power, not pause.
International Women’s Day can focus on Building a Community That Supports Women 45+
- Empowerment doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens in community.
- That’s why I created Blooming Together—a space where women 45+ can share experiences, support one another, and learn together. This is how we rewrite the narrative of aging and wellness.
How You Can Celebrate International Women’s Day in a Meaningful Way?
Celebrating IWD doesn’t have to be just about social media posts—it can be a day of action, self-reflection, and connection. Here are some ways to make it personal:
- Prioritize Your Well-being. Whether it’s committing to a new movement routine, exploring nutrition, or setting boundaries, self-care is an act of empowerment.
- Support Other Women. Lift up the women in your life—share resources, celebrate their wins, and create spaces where they feel seen.
- You can also use this day to Educate and Advocate. Use this day to educate yourself and others about women’s health issues, workplace policies, and systemic changes that benefit midlife women.
- Join a Community. Find a group of like-minded women who are focused on growth, well-being, and empowerment. If you haven’t already, I invite you to check out Blooming Together, where we want to have real conversations about wellness, mental health, and thriving in midlife.
International Women’s Day isn’t just about looking back at how far we’ve come—it’s about looking forward to what’s next. For us, it’s about taking ownership of our health, happiness, and future. It’s about knowing that we are not past our prime—we are in our power. So, let’s make this International Women’s Day a celebration of us—women 45+ who are rewriting the narrative of aging, wellness, and empowerment. Your journey to health and happiness is just beginning.
Until next time, stay strong, vibrant, and unstoppable.
Happy International Women's Day!
